2023 Summer Institute: Requirements for Pre-Scholars (Rising 8th and 9th graders)

- You must be entering the 8th grade for the Junior Achievers Academy.
- You must be entering 9th grade for the Fellows Academy.
- You must have at least an overall “B” average in a competitive academic program.
- You must supply two (2) letters of recommendation; at least one from a teacher or counselor.
- You must complete the student online application.
- You must submit an official transcript.
- Your parents must be willing to support the Institute’s mission, goals, and objectives.
- You do not need to complete an essay
- Please note a personal laptop is strongly recommended during participation in the Summer Institute
The review of applicants will be performed in an expeditious manner. Semi-finalists will be virtually interviewed at the online Orientation and Screening Program.
COVID-19
To protect the health and safety of all participants, all applicants must present proof of COVID-19 vaccination and the updated bivalent booster in support of their application. In addition, regular COVID-19 testing will be conducted throughout the course of the program for the overall health of participants. In the event of a major surge in COVID-19 cases prior to or during the Summer Institute, the W.E.B. Du Bois Scholars Institute reserves the right to pivot from in-person programming to an alternate online program to better protect the health and safety of everyone involved.

2023 Summer Institute: Requirements for Scholars (Rising 10th, Rising 11th & Rising 12th Graders)
To be considered for participation in the Summer Institute, a complete application must be received. The information submitted should be typewritten or in pen. To be eligible, applicants must follow the criteria below:
- For the safety of all participants, proof of up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination & bivalent booster is required in support of their application.*
- You must be a freshman, sophomore or junior in high school.
- You must have at least an overall “B” average in a competitive academic program.
- You must be in the upper quarter of your class.
- You must write an essay consisting of at least 300 words stating why you wish to participate in the Institute and describing your education and career goals, community service activities and/or leadership roles you have performed.
- You must supply two (2) letters of recommendation; at least one from a teacher or counselor.
- You must complete the student online application.
- You must submit an official transcript.
- Your parents must be willing to support the Institute’s mission, goals, and objectives.

Requirements for the Accelerated Learning Academy
In light of COVID-19, the 2021-2022 Accelerated Learning Academy (for 10th & 11th graders) and the 2021-2022 Accelerated Learning Academy (for 8th & 9th graders) will be ONLINE PROGRAMS. To be considered for participation in both programs a complete application with supplementary materials must be received. The information submitted should be typewritten or in pen. To be eligible, applicants must follow the criteria below:
- Currently in 8th or 9th grade
- Currently in 10th or 11th grade
- Minimum Overall GPA: 3.0, 75/100 or B
- Minimum Overall Average in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and or Mathematics) Courses: B
- Completed Online Application
- 300 Word Essay: What is your interest in the program? Describe your education and career goals.
- You must supply two (2) letters of recommendation; at least one from a teacher or counselor.
- School Transcript
